The Panama Reforestation Project was the first Gold Standard-certified agroforestry program in the world — a true tree planting pioneer. What used to be degraded farmland is now turning into strong, biodiverse forests all over Panama, mixing 20 local tree species with farmed cocoa trees and sustainable timber, alongside dedicated conservation areas.

Based in the Southern highlands of Tanzania, this project helps to reverse the mass deforestation that occurred between 1990 and 2010, when the country lost almost 20% (around eight million hectares) of forest cover.

The Tanzania Reforestation Project works with local communities to transform degraded land into large forests. Nearly half of the project area (46%) is dedicated to conservation while wood from the other half is harvested sustainably as natural building material.

The Mauritania Solar Power Project is the largest of its kind in the region, with 156,000 solar panels stretching 600,000 square meters across the Sahara, harvesting enough sun energy to power 15% of the nation’s electricity needs while pioneering green innovation.

90% of electricity fed into South Africa’s national grid is produced by coal-fired power plants. This creates massive CO2 emissions and air pollution. For a country that receives strong sunlight all year round, a transition to solar is crucial.

This award-winning project harvests sun energy through so-called solar-thermal technology, which stores energy as heat and can therefore produce consistent electricity even at night. A portion of the project is owned by the local community and funds different development and empowerment initiatives.

South Africa Solar Power Project

In the last five years, the share of electricity generated by solar power in Vietnam increased from almost zero to nearly 11% — an amazing accomplishment. The country is quickly becoming one the world’s largest producers of solar power and has vowed to go net zero by 2050. But in order to achieve this goal, coal must be rapidly phased out, which is why projects like this are so important.

Ghana has one of the highest deforestation rates worldwide. In 1990, the country had 8.2 million hectares of high forest. In 2010, only 1.2 million remained. One of the main causes is the inefficient use of wood or charcoal for cooking, used by over 80% of the population.

This project protects forests in Ghana by addressing a root cause of deforestation: The heavy use of firewood for daily cooking. By providing families with the “Gyapa” cookstove, this project measurably reduces carbon emissions and makes homes safer.
